A stainless steel pet bowl with a rubber collar around the foot, so the bowl stays where you set it down instead of travelling across the kitchen floor while the dog eats.
The bowl is one drawn piece of steel with a polished interior. Colour, where there is colour, sits on the outside wall only. The surface the food touches is bare steel on every size and every finish.
Why does the base matter?
A light bowl on tile gets pushed. The dog shoves it into a corner and then eats out of the corner, which is how you end up wiping kibble off the skirting board twice a day. The rubber collar here sits on the foot, the widest part of the bowl, so it grips over the biggest circle the shape allows. It also takes out the metal-on-tile rattle that makes some dogs hang back from the bowl. The supplier's own sheet says the collar can be taken off.
Which size do I order?
Five, measured across the mouth and across the base:
- Size 1: mouth 4.3 in (11 cm), base 5.9 in (15 cm), 1.6 in (4 cm) tall
- Size 2: mouth 5.1 in (13 cm), base 7.1 in (18 cm), 1.9 in (4.7 cm) tall
- Size 3: mouth 6.3 in (16 cm), base 8.7 in (22 cm), 2.0 in (5 cm) tall
- Size 4: mouth 7.9 in (20 cm), base 10.2 in (26 cm), 2.4 in (6 cm) tall
- Size 5: mouth 8.7 in (22 cm), base 11.8 in (30 cm), 2.8 in (7 cm) tall
The supplier's size sheet also pairs each one with a dog weight: size 1 up to about 4 lb, size 2 for 6 to 11 lb, size 3 for 12 to 27 lb, size 4 for 29 to 55 lb, size 5 for 56 to 110 lb. That is their guidance, converted from their figures. The measurements above are the thing to order on.
How much does it hold?
We do not have a volume from the supplier and we are not going to estimate one from a photograph. Use the mouth diameter and the depth.
What finishes are there?
Bare polished steel, and four painted outers: green, orange, sky blue and pink. The paint stops at the rim.
How do I clean it?
Warm water and a cloth. The inside is polished with no corner for food to pack into, and steel does not hold smell the way a scratched plastic bowl does.
Why we make this
Waffle is a Bernese mountain dog. He is good at lying down and not much else.
The shop started after a bad few weeks. He began pausing before he jumped out of the car and we did not think much of it. Then he brought back up a bowl of food he had eaten in about nine seconds.
Neither was an emergency. Both were the kind of thing that becomes one if you keep not noticing.
We sell the dull stuff. A ramp so he steps down instead of landing. A bowl he cannot inhale. A base he cannot shove across the kitchen floor.
The best day is the one where nothing happens.
