This is a round plush donut bed with a raised rim, in five sizes from 9.8 in (25 cm) across for a cat or a very small dog up to 27.6 in (70 cm) for a dog of about 33 lb (15 kg).

He sleeps curled with his nose tucked under a back leg and his spine against something. A flat mat gives him nothing to press into. This one has a rim all the way round, so whichever way he turns there is a wall there.

The rim is the part he actually uses

Watch where he puts his head and it is nearly always against an edge. The wall of this bed runs the full circle, so there is no wrong way to lie down in it.

Pick the size by how he sleeps, not by how big he is

A dog who sprawls wants the next size up so his legs can hang over the rim. A dog who curls tight can stay in his own size. Five to choose from: 9.8, 15.7, 19.7, 23.6 and 27.6 in across (25, 40, 50, 60 and 70 cm).

Long-pile suede on the inside

The supplier lists the fabric as suede. It is the long, soft kind that a dog will dig at and reshape before he settles.

A note on the sizes

The two smallest, 9.8 and 15.7 in, are cat and toy-breed sizes. The largest takes a dog of roughly 22 to 33 lb (10 to 15 kg). Waffle does not fit in any of them, so you will not see him in the photographs for this one.

What is inside it?

Polyester fibrefill. The supplier prints it as PP cotton, and the close-up photographs as loose white staple fibre.

What size should I get?

Go by the weight on each size rather than the breed. 9.8 in (25 cm) suits a pet up to about 2.2 lb (1 kg), 15.7 in (40 cm) takes 3.3 to 5.5 lb (1.5 to 2.5 kg), 19.7 in (50 cm) takes 8.8 to 11 lb (4 to 5 kg), 23.6 in (60 cm) takes 17 to 22 lb (7.5 to 10 kg) and 27.6 in (70 cm) takes 22 to 33 lb (10 to 15 kg). If he sleeps stretched out rather than curled, take the next size up.

Is it big enough for a large breed?

No. The biggest size stops at about 33 lb (15 kg). A Labrador or a Bernese will hang out of it.

The supplier lists the fabric as suede, in a long pile.

Why we make this

Waffle is a Bernese mountain dog. He is good at lying down and not much else.

The shop started after a bad few weeks. He began pausing before he jumped out of the car and we did not think much of it. Then he brought back up a bowl of food he had eaten in about nine seconds.

Neither was an emergency. Both were the kind of thing that becomes one if you keep not noticing.

We sell the dull stuff. A ramp so he steps down instead of landing. A bowl he cannot inhale. A base he cannot shove across the kitchen floor.

The best day is the one where nothing happens.
