This is a heart-shaped silicone lick mat with suction cups on the back, so it sticks to the wall, the floor or the side of the tub and stays there while your dog licks it clean.
A dog that finishes a bowl in nine seconds has not eaten, he has swallowed. Spread something soft across the raised pattern and the same food takes him several minutes instead.
The surface is molded into raised shapes: paws, bones, fish and flowers, with grooves between them, so soft food gets pushed into the gaps and he has to work it back out with his tongue. The suction cups on the back hold it flat against a smooth surface, which is the difference between a lick mat and a frisbee.
Use it at bath time, at nail time, or on the days when the rain means he has been inside since breakfast.
What do I put on it?
Anything soft enough to spread and thin enough to get into the grooves. Wet food, plain yogurt, pumpkin purée, peanut butter with no xylitol in it. Check the label for xylitol before you use any peanut butter with a dog.
Where does it stick?
Any smooth flat surface: tile, glass, the side of the bath, a kitchen cupboard door. It will not hold on grout, wood grain or textured wall paint.
How do I clean it?
Silicone, so it goes in the dishwasher on the top rack, or peel it off and rinse it under a hot tap.
Will it stop him eating too fast?
It slows him down for as long as the food lasts. It is a mat, not a bowl. It is for soft food you spread, not for dry kibble you pour.
Why we make this
Waffle is a Bernese mountain dog. He is good at lying down and not much else.
The shop started after a bad few weeks. He began pausing before he jumped out of the car and we did not think much of it. Then he brought back up a bowl of food he had eaten in about nine seconds.
Neither was an emergency. Both were the kind of thing that becomes one if you keep not noticing.
